The Distinguished Young Woman of Illinois for 2021 is Katherine Wu, from Long Grove.

Katherine’s achievements include: Gold President's Volunteer Service Award • The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards- Gold and Silver Keys • Gold Honor Roll (highest honor roll) for all semesters) • 1st place at Star Systems Regional Dance Competition 2018 • Platinum at Taoli Cup Int'l Dance Competition 2018, 2019 • NHS + National Honor Society of Dance Arts Inductee • School’s literary magazine I helped compile won 1st from ASAN • Communication Arts Junior AP Achievement Award • Ambassador Award (from school for getting a 36 on the ACT) • Writings published in various online national journals and magazines

In addition, Katherine’s activities include: Dance: weekly classes in all styles, choreographer • Writing (own projects): I have a blog and I wrote and published a book • Teen Insider Magazine Writer: I write monthly articles • Project Pen Pal (E-board): Helped found Spanish branch • Write Club: Director of Communications (creative writing) • Freshmen Mentor Program: also known as a Link Leader • COVID: organized/taught free zoom dance classes + book club for kids • Racial Justice Book Club: discuss books and what we can do to help • Dancing for Dancers Nonprofit Intern • Yale Young Global Scholars Connect (summer program)
Organize + perform in bi-monthly shows at a senior center in Long Grove • Weekly dance teacher assistant for elementary schoolers since 2017 • Camp Counselor and English teacher for middle schoolers in China, (2018) • Organized senior spotlights with nonprofit Dancing for Dancers (prior to intern)
